Succeeding online is not always easy - for most people. Some people will just never make a single cent online, let alone build a successful online business. It's no surprise - the odds are against people succeeding when you leave the 'system'. In school, most people pass their exams. In business, most people fail. It's the way the system works.  So if you want to leave the system, you've got to think outside the system. You've got to do what's required outside the system. In school and at work, people tell us what to do. In business, we are in the driving seat. There's nobody to push us and tell us what to do. It's either do or do not, every minute, every day. Every minute you're working, you have a decision to make.  The way I see it, in the majority of people who fail online, there are two camps: the casual player and the desperate player. Both players will never become professionals in what they do. The casual player is too relaxed and not serious and will give up too easily. They are just 'trying' things out. If they don't make it, they will just go back to their day job. No harm done.

The desperate player is more dangerous. They will spend a lot of money and effort trying things out, but in a haphazard manner. In the end, they will have nothing to show for it because they are trying out so many things at once they never become good at anything. They are left with even more debts and in an even more desperate situation.  So you see, Internet marketing is like a game. There are professional players, casual players and desperate players. Just like in pro sports, you can train to become a professional player. But you won't be able to do it by becoming a weekend Sunday player. Pros play long after the rest have gone home. Pros play even when they are tired.  Most people will never become pros. The good news is, you have a much higher chance of succeeding in Internet marketing than in pro sports or in entertainment.

You can learn to become a marketer by studying and implementing what others are doing. Internet marketing is a learned skill that you can master in a short period of time.  Make a schedule of marketing activities for your business. Marketing is the most important activity within your business, so schedule time every day to take action in this area. This needs to be at least fifty percent of each day, even though that may be different from what you are used to doing. The businesses that understand the importance of regular marketing will prosper during good times and bad, so give yourself the benefit of knowing this going in.  Email your list at least once a week so they will remember who you are. Make sure to include informational emails, as well as those where you are promoting something. The fear is that they will unsubscribe if you email them too often, but the truth is that they will not remember who you are if you do not stay in touch with them regularly. Remember that people who are truly interested in your topic want to hear from you.

Tell everyone who you are and what you have to offer. Don't be afraid to brag about what you are doing and how it will benefit others. You can easily create a 'buzz' online by blogging, sending press releases, and sharing information about what you are doing on Facebook and Twitter. Build excitement with everything you, no matter how small it may seem to you at the time. I call this the 'Kindergarten Effect' because you will be just as excited in sharing your business news as a Kindergartner is when they have show and tell.  Always be contemplating how and what you will be promoting to your list. This should be well thought out in advance so that what you do makes sense for your business model. If you do a mix of affiliate marketing and marketing of your own products and services, decide well in advance whose products you will promote. It is crucial that these products be complimentary to what you are providing for your prospects and customers.  Remember why people came to you for information in the first place, and need your offers in alignment with this. Even though your prospects may need to lose weight and may own a dog that is in desperate need of training does not mean they expect to receive information on these topics from you. Deliver information, products, and services based on the exact topic they originally signed up to receive from you.
